NO MORE THE WASTED BREED

Elusu, the river goddess, is furious. Her waters — once sacred and life-giving — have been abused and polluted by the very people who depend on her. In retribution, she unleashes her wrath on a village already drowning in neglect. The people groan under nature’s punishment and their own suffering, exhausted by endless sacrifices that bring no relief. Yet Olokun, her husband and god of the sea, stands on the side of justice. He sees what the people refuse to: the problem isn’t just defiled waters, but a defiled system. Osofisan uses this mythic conflict between gods and humans to expose a deeper human crisis — the exploitation of the masses by the ruling class. With sharp irony and piercing questions, the play asks: Why must the “carrier” of sacrifice, suffering, and change always come from among the poor, the youth, and the vulnerable — and never from the rich and powerful?
